Aidan Turner has worked as a Sheffield gardener for some years. Despite Sheffield’s ‘Steel City’ moniker, it is actually an incredibly verdant place and the Peak District that it nestles in is known internationally for its natural beauty. There are more than 200 parks, woodlands and gardens in the city, and an estimated 2.5 million trees, giving Sheffield the highest ratio of trees to people of any city in Europe. As a landscaper and garden designer it’s an inspiring area to live and work in.
Aidan didn’t always work as a gardener in Sheffield. His training as a landscape gardener took place at the Garden Design School in Bristol, where he studied under Robin Templar-Williams & Moira Farnham. He says “I couldn’t really ask for a better education in landscape gardening. Upon completion of my training, I was awarded a distinction and came back up north to start work in Sheffield”. Since then he has set up a team of sub-contractors to help him fulfill his garden designs as AT Gardens.
Aidan has enjoyed developing his own style of garden design and landscaping. He has worked for the National Trust and studied art and design which has been great for thinking creatively about garden spaces. One example is his affinity for including ‘reclaimed’ objects in his gardens: discarded objects re-purposed as garden features. See the reclaimed railway sleepers in the portfolio section for an example the team are particularly happy with.
One of the most enjoyable things about being a gardener in Sheffield is the range of projects that the team has had the opportunity to work on. We have completed smaller personal garden spaces and larger areas that are open to the public. For example, we completely re-worked the garden at the refurbished Broadfield Pub in Sheffield in 2012, which was a really interesting public space to work on. We also completed ‘The Print-Maker’s Garden‘ around the same time, which is a private garden area.
Aidan enjoys project managing gardens from start to finish and is as happy creating garden designs and project management plans as planting and digging. He really enjoys working with the team to transform his designs into reality.
Aidan and the team are prepared to travel beyond Sheffield and South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the East Midlands as well as further afield.
